Stamats08 Integrated Marketing - Higher Ed & Web Shiz

Yo. So, I’m leaving Tampa in about an hour — yeah, that’s right. Tampa.

The conference I attended was called Stamats 08: Integrated Marketing. Sounds kinda general, eh? It was actually about marketing and online presence/communication for higher education. And being that I work at a college and write their website copy/keep online shiz on lockdown, I was there for a reason.

Except…a lot of the information seemed like a playbook for how to use the Internet. Minus presentations by a few people, a lot of the information was very stale: “Young people use the Internet a lot! Young people love social networking! Young people are engaged by interactive content!”

Seriously? My friend Jesse over at Digitas could have sat down with me for two hours and been more insightful about the right way to do marketing. Or LittleKHole, who is a media genius. For reals; they do rad stuff.

I’ve left another conference really let down by the lack of insight into common questions/problems/challenges. Innovation may not be higher education’s steeze, but it was depressing. I knew half this stuff in college — yes, I’m an entitled asshole. But yeah, I was the youngest one there, and once again left feeling like people still do NOT get my generation at all.

When you place SO much emphasis on your web presence - because, after all, we are not a blogging company/retail store/etc - you can lose track of what matters more: YOUR FREAKING COLLEGE.

ANYWAY. Not to be such a hater. Brad Ward and Karlyn Morisette did great presentations, as did Matt Herzberger. They had the kind of insight and relation of social media to ROI that I attended the conference to hear.

Also, please stop using the word “viral,” everyone. For real - it’s over. You cannot MAKE “viral videos.”
